RaySense Fibre Optic Sensing Principle of Detection
Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems are used in external environments to detect the presence of an intruder attempting to breach a perimeter. With one of the market’s most innovative fibre optic monitoring capabilities, the RaySense provides 100% perimeter coverage for long-range applications without gaps between sensors. The fibre optic cable is the sensor.
The RaySense system is a powerful vibration acoustic sensor that uses a typical single-mode fibre optic cable. RBtec employs distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology and distributed vibration sensing (DVS) technology for different applications to monitor fibre optics. The fibre optic cable is highly sensitive to pressure, acoustics, and motion, which allows it to detect vibrations transmitted through the fence, soil, or the surface. The RaySense system can monitor the vibration signals along the length of the fibre optic cable, locate an intrusion event, and classify the specific signatures based on the detection algorithm.
The deployment of a RaySense fibre-optic intrusion detection system using a single fibre-optic cable is an excellent choice for ensuring reliable perimeter security over a distance of 5 to 100 km/3 to 62 miles. The system can detect and locate any intrusion within a 3-20 m/10-60 ft range across the entire perimeter. Additionally, the system can provide unlimited coverage by connecting with additional network controllers.
RaySense Vidalert Alarm Management Software
The Alarm Process Unit (APU) of the RaySense System is responsible for monitoring the optical signal. It uses advanced two-layer AI algorithms to differentiate between breach, cut, climb, walk, vehicle, and non-threatening nuisances. The RaySense System detects these activities by comparing them with a database of known vibration frequencies, making it easy to calibrate. Additionally, the system’s performance remains consistent over time, requiring minimal or no maintenance for the APU.
The RaySense is available in two configurations: single channel or dual channel. The RBtec PinPoint Intrusion Detection System is the most cost-effective, high-performance solution for protecting long perimeters and other infrastructure.
Why AI Matters?
The RBtec RaySense system employs Deep Learning (DL) algorithms, acting like a digital brain to learn from over 150,000 data records. It stands out because:
1. Predicting the Unseen: RaySense excels at identifying, understanding, and alerting to events it hasn’t encountered before, such as cutting, climbing, lifting, and jumping over fences it wasn’t trained on. This unique feature allows it to adapt to new scenarios effortlessly.
2. “Yes” Detection Approach: Unlike other systems that focus on filtering out false alarms, RaySense is trained to specifically detect and respond to the events for which we want to trigger alarms. This approach ensures a focused detection mechanism, aiming to capture only meaningful incidents without the need for filtering false alarms.
3. Easy and Reliable Calibration: RaySense’s calibration process is straightforward and basic, designed to tune the AI to the specific infrastructure it’s protecting. This simplicity, combined with its ability to detect genuine incidents accurately, makes RaySense a more innovative and reliable choice, ensuring a hassle-free setup for your security system.
RaySense’s innovative use of DL, its targeted “yes” detection strategy, and its simple calibration process set it apart in the market, offering a more efficient and reliable solution for detecting anomalies.
The most economical way to protect a long perimeter
Utilizing fiber-optic cable, the system is the most economically competitive technology currently available for long distances. Requiring only a single alarm processing unit (APU) to cover up to 100km/62 miles with no power or electronics in the field. Using a rugged fiber-optic sensing cable results in the most cost-effective fence detection solution for large perimeters.

What is Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) Technology?
Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) Technology is an advanced variant of an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) that monitors the coherent Rayleigh backscatter noise signature in a fibre optic cable as pulsed light is sent into the fibre. The coherent Rayleigh noise generates a fine structure in the backscatter signature of the fibre cable. The DAS focuses on the Rayleigh component to increase its prominence in the backscatter trace.
DAS is optimised to measure small changes in the coherent Rayleigh noise structure that occurs from pulse to pulse. Since the coherent Rayleigh noise structure is generated interferometrically within the fibre by the relative locations and strengths of local scattering centres intrinsic to the structure of the glass, minimal physical (acoustic or vibration) disturbances at a point in the fibre can make detectable changes in the interferometric signal.

What parts does a fiber optic sensing system includes?
The RaySense fiber optic security system usually includes a sensor cable in the length of choice, End line unit, the RaySense DAS laser unit and a Server (APU). Other accessories are optional and need to be added separately.
How long of a fence or ground can the RaySense system monitor?
The Maximum length is 100km/62mile but the RaySense family of products is sold in 1 or 2 channels and each channel can monitor 5km/3.1 miles to 100km/62mi.
In order to cover a longer perimeter, multiple systems (APUs) can be combined to cover the whole perimeter line.
If the sensor cable gets cut or broken what happens?
If the fiber optic sensor cable gets cut, an alarm will trigger in the exact location of the cut or fault. The RaySense DAS system would detect up to the cut location as well. If installed in a 2-channel redundant cut-resistant configuration, no loss of signal or detection will happen with a single cut.
How accurate is the RaySense detection?
Detection performance and detection accuracy are ±3 m (10 ft) on standard chain link fences. Two disturbances must be separated by a minimum of 20 meters (65 feet) to be reported separately because vibrations on the fence can travel sideways and affect a larger area of the cable.
Can the sensitivity of the sensor be adjusted?
Sure! The RaySense artificial intelligence (AI) is doing most of the work! But in case fine tuning is needed, there are options to set up software assignable and adjustable zones. Each zone can have its own sensitivity and detection characters.
Does the system need any calibration before I can use it?
The RaySense is a highly sophisticated system that can detect and analyze very long cables. A certified technician would have to perform a calibration process to adjust the system performance to each site.
Can the RaySense work on any fiber optic cable?
The RaySense system operates by monitoring a standard single-mode fiber optic cable. Although it is theoretically possible to monitor any fiber optic cable, for security purposes, it is highly recommended to use the RBtec special cable, which is specifically designed for outdoor, direct burial, and security applications. However, in situations where the customer already possesses a fiber optic cable and no other alternative is available, it is still possible to use it.
If the cable got cut can it repaired?
Yes! Like any fiber optic cable, the RaySense cable can be repaired by a fusion splicing.
