What Actually Happened
On August 11, 2026, WSOC-TV in Charlotte reported that thieves had gone through the fences at more than one city fire station and broken into vehicles parked inside. At Fire Station 25 on Pleasant Grove Road, someone cut a hole in the perimeter fence to reach the cars behind it. A few miles west at Fire Station 21 on Little Rock Road, a crew was already out replacing another cut section, and one SUV in the lot had lost its driver’s side window.
Two details matter more than the property loss. The fence itself was the way in, at more than one address, in the same stretch of days. And there are surveillance cameras around the stations, but police had not released any video.
The Detection Gap
A fire station is an unusual security problem. It is staffed around the clock and empty on no notice at all. When a call comes in, the apparatus leaves and the staff parking area behind the building becomes an unwatched fenced yard in a matter of seconds. Nobody schedules that window. It opens when someone else’s emergency opens it.
Sites of this shape are common well beyond the fire service. Public works yards, water plants, transit facilities and school bus lots share the same profile: a modest chain-link perimeter, a paved interior full of vehicles and equipment, lighting designed for safe walking rather than image quality, and long stretches with nobody looking outward.
Cameras are part of the answer at every one of those sites. They verify what they can see, they support the report, and they carry the investigation afterward. What they cannot be asked to do alone is turn a quiet cut at the back fence line into an alarm in the moment it happens. Whether analytics flag that event depends on line of sight, lighting, weather, distance, mounting position and tuning, and a fence at the dark edge of a lot is where those conditions are least favorable.
That is the gap the Charlotte reporting exposes. Not an absence of equipment. A difference between recording an event and being told about it.
How IRONCLAD Addresses This

- If our fence were cut tonight at the darkest corner of the lot, who would learn about it, and how long would that take?
- Is anyone actually watching our camera feeds during the hours our site is unoccupied, or are they reviewed only after something is reported?
- Do our cameras have clear line of sight along the fence line itself, or are they aimed at doors, bays and driveways?
- When our crews respond to a call, does any system remain responsible for the perimeter they leave behind?
- If we were hit three times in one week, would we be able to tell whether the same section of fence was involved?
The Bottom Line
The people at these stations spend their working lives responding to other people’s emergencies. The least a perimeter can do is speak up about its own. A fence that reports the moment it is cut turns an unattended yard into a supervised one, without asking anyone to sit and watch a monitor.
