What is Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)?

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a groundbreaking technology that transforms standard optical fibers into an extensive array of highly sensitive acoustic sensors. By leveraging existing fiber-optic cables, DAS provides continuous, real-time acoustic data over extensive distances, offering unmatched precision and reliability. How Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Works

At the heart of DAS technology are standard telecommunication optical fibers, which are already widely deployed and easy to install in various environments. These fibers are typically used for data transmission but can be repurposed for acoustic sensing without any modifications.

The RaySense processor, called an interrogator, sends short pulses of laser light down the optical fiber in rapid succession. Each pulse travels the full length of the sensor cable.

As each pulse travels, tiny natural imperfections in the glass reflect a small amount of light back toward the processor. This effect, known as Rayleigh backscatter, produces a stable reflection pattern when the cable is undisturbed.

When sound or vibration reaches the cable, it slightly stretches and compresses the fiber and changes the reflection pattern at that point. The processor continuously compares the returning light against the baseline to spot these changes.

Because light travels at a known speed, the time between sending a pulse and receiving a changed reflection tells the processor where along the cable the disturbance occurred.

Signal processing compares the vibration signature against known patterns such as footsteps, digging, vehicle movement, cutting or climbing. This helps the system separate meaningful events from routine background activity.

Classified events are mapped to zones and locations on the perimeter and passed to the security system as alarms, so operators see what happened and where without walking the line.

RaySense is RBtec’s fiber optic intrusion detection family based on Distributed Acoustic Sensing. A standard optical sensor cable is installed on a fence or buried in the ground, and the RaySense processor continuously analyzes the light traveling through it. When someone climbs, cuts, walks or digs near the cable, the system detects the vibration, locates it along the perimeter and raises an alarm.

Yes. The fence mounted version attaches the sensor cable to the fence fabric to detect cutting and climbing, and the buried version is installed in the ground to detect walking, running and digging above it. DAS is designed for long perimeters. A single processor can monitor a sensor cable that runs for many kilometers, which is why the technology is used on borders, pipelines and large critical infrastructure sites. No. The sensing element is passive optical fiber. It carries light rather than electricity, so there are no powered components or electronics along the perimeter. This also means the cable is not affected by electromagnetic interference or lightning induced surges the way copper based sensors can be.

The processor evaluates the pattern, strength, persistence and location of each vibration rather than reacting to any single movement. Broad, distributed disturbances such as wind and rain look different from the localized signature of a person cutting or climbing, and detection parameters can be tuned per zone during commissioning to fit the site conditions.
