Construction sites have always been soft targets, but the numbers are moving in the wrong direction fast. A joint industry report from jobsite security firms TrueLook and Noonlight, covered on July 28, 2026 by the insurance trade publication Carrier Management, counted 2,639 break-ins at active commercial construction sites across the United States in 2025. In 2024 the figure was 1,750. More than 800 break-ins have already been reported this year.

The report is less interesting for the headline count than for how predictable the crime turns out to be. More than 40 percent of break-ins happened over a weekend. The peak window was overnight, between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. Break-ins rise in April as the weather warms and daylight stretches, then climb again through the July to December construction season.
What thieves take is equally predictable. Conex boxes and storage containers sitting in laydown areas with staged material are a primary target, along with copper wire, lumber and roofing supplies. Heavy equipment left with keys inside goes next. Generators, temporary power equipment and hand tools round out the list.
The finding that matters most for perimeter design is the entry method. According to the report, the most common way onto a jobsite was simply a truck driving in. In the report’s own words, unlocked or unsecured gates are the most common enabler of construction site theft. The report also cautions that perimeter fencing on its own is not a deterrent, and that sites hold up best when physical controls are paired with detection, alerting and a real response capability.

A construction perimeter is not a permanent one. The fence line moves as the build progresses, gates are wide enough to pass a concrete truck, and the laydown yard is open ground with no structure to mount anything to. That geometry creates a gap that a fence-only approach cannot close on its own.
Fence-mounted detection is very good at what it does. It senses the disturbance of someone cutting or climbing the fabric, which is exactly how a person on foot usually gets in. A vehicle rolling through an open gate never touches the fence at all, so that event has to be caught somewhere else.
Cameras are the other half of the answer, not a replacement for detection. They verify what they can see, and camera analytics depend on line of sight, lighting, weather, distance, placement, maintenance and tuning, all of which change on a jobsite from one month to the next. The report offers a useful reality check here: of the 170,000 alarms its monitoring teams reviewed, 2,000 escalated to a police call, and 29 percent of those were judged false alarms caused by routine employee activity. Alerting is only valuable when the thing generating the alert can tell the difference between a crew and an intruder.
