A fence is a delay, not a detection system. It buys time, and how much depends entirely on whether anyone knows the attempt is happening. Fence-mounted detection closes that gap by making the fence itself the sensor, so the alarm is raised at the moment of the attempt rather than when an intruder is already inside and in front of a camera.
Three things defeat a fence: cutting through the fabric, climbing over it, and lifting it to crawl underneath. All three put energy into the fence structure, and all three sound different from wind, rain, traffic and a gate closing. A fence sensor’s job is to tell those apart reliably enough that operators keep trusting it — a system that cries wolf gets switched off, which is the worst outcome of all.
IRONCLAD is a fence-mounted sensor cable that attaches to the fence fabric and detects cutting, climbing and lifting directly at the fence line. It is designed to be plug-and-play, which matters on sites without a specialist integrator on hand.
MicAlert is a microphonic sensor cable built specifically for rigid fences — welded mesh, palisade, wrought iron and aluminum. Rigid structures transmit the sharp, high-frequency signature of an attack cleanly, and MicAlert analyzes noise patterns to pick it out. On a rigid fence it is the more appropriate choice; on a flexible chain link fence, a cable designed for fabric movement will serve you better.
RaySense takes a different approach: distributed acoustic sensing turns a standard single-mode fiber optic cable into one continuous sensor up to 100 km long. There is no per-zone hardware strung along the fence, which changes the economics on long perimeters and on sites where getting power to the fence line is the hard part.
The honest way to choose is by fence construction first, run length second, and what infrastructure already reaches the perimeter third. If you tell us those three things we can usually narrow it to one.
Fence sensors appear in the security standards that govern critical infrastructure — substation physical security, water utility resilience, port facility security plans and cargo handling standards all contemplate detection at the boundary rather than surveillance alone. If you are working to a named standard, say which one; the requirement usually dictates the detection approach more than the site does.
